Collage on Deep Panel

Delicate lines on vintage mining maps are inspiration for this body of work. Added layers of rice paper marked with ink create an illusion of depth and connection.

There is a subtle reference to our relationship to our planet in these pieces. Marks dancing over the surface of the map echo the energy and spirit of natural forces that shape the land. Hand-drawn lines and gestures suggest a metaphor for man’s effect on our environment. My intent is a meditation on beauty, though, its underlying melancholy might be hard to ignore.

I’m drawn to use natural and handmade materials in my work. Some of the ink I use, I brew myself from walnuts gathered near my home in New Mexico.
